I suppose I was a little harsh there, yeah. I feel like there are two main arcs in Mogwai’s discography — the first being the more oblique post-rockin’ stuff and the second being the shorter-form, more songlike material. Minimalism and timbral variety are still important compositional tools at this point, but they’re not as totally primary. You get something like ”Glasgow Mega-Snake” whose first half-minute has about as many chord changes as all of Young Team and it’s almost like two different bands. Though my preference is for the first one, I’d definitely agree that Mr Beast is totally the best of the second wave. I was listening to it today and there are some solid tracks; I’m a huge fan of their rhythmic approach, which seems really distinctive even though they’re still in 4/4.
