I recently finished The Rest Is Noise by Alex Ross, which is an excellent, comprehensive treatment of twentieth-century art music. Huge recommendation for anyone who’s interested in the era’s aesthetic contours, but isn’t acquainted with much of the canon — in my case, little beyond Debussy and the Minimalists. I’m excited to explore the century’s strange corners.
